Scoliosis derives from the Greek word skolios, which means twisted, therefore when applied to the spine it means it is twisted or curved. Depending on the degree of this curvature of the spine, treatment may be necessary or not. That is, it may be necessary to resort to column operations.
It is a fact that almost 3% of the general population has scoliosis with a curvature of less than 10 degrees and that this does not necessarily cause health problems. Scoliosis greater than 20 degrees can be seen at early ages, and is usually detected before adolescence.
Treatment for each type of scoliosis in children will depend on the type of curvature, but above all on the degree of curvature. Therefore, with curvatures of less than 20 degrees, treatment consists in postural exercises to keep the musculature as tonic as possible and to try to stop the curvature increasing with growth.
If the curvature exceeds 20 degrees, postural exercises can be combined with support in the form of a brace, used at night or continuously day and night (24 hours) and, of course, in cases where the curvature is greater, causing significant deformity or pain, corrective surgery for scoliosis is recommended.
The vast majority of patients with scoliosis do not suffer pain during most of their lives, but when they reach adulthood and develop osteoarthritis, this causes pain. In cases of adult scoliosis treatment will be aimed at treating the point of the spine that causes the problem in each patient and only in cases where there is spinal decompensation due to scoliosis, in Instituto Clavel we will proceed to a surgical correction of scoliosis.
