Loop-X Intraoperative Scanner

Loop-X® is a mobile intraoperative imaging robot that allows our neurosurgeons to obtain a large, real-time field of view of the patient during surgery. With these images, and thanks to the Curve® neuronavigator, the surgical process can be planned, reviewed, documented and even broadcast live, offering out patients greatly enhanced precision and safety in spinal and brain surgery

In 2015, our center in Barcelona was the first in Spain to have the latest generation O-arm® 2 intraoperative scanner and the intraoperative navigation StealthStation® S7®. Now, we continue to opt for the most innovative technology by installing one of the only three Loop-X robots in the world, in our center in Madrid

How does Loop-X work?

The Loop-X equipment is controlled wirelessly with a touchscreen tablet within the surgical area, and without the need for a cart with a monitor. The equipment moves autonomously by remote control to acquire images of the area of interest. 

When the patient is positioned, the system provides wide 2D and 3D images of regions such as the spine and pelvis, with the highest quality imaging available on the market today. 

The images are sent to the navigator to help locate, and project, the incision start points directly on the patient's skin. They also guide implant placement. Once this is done, the scanner performs a final image check to confirm the placement of the implants. 

What are the benefits for the patient?

This scanner, combined with the minimally invasive surgical techniques we use at Instituto Clavel, such as the anterior approach or lateral approach, allows surgery to be safer and leads to better results. 

These are the main benefits for the patient when this technology is used during the operation: 

  • Reduced surgery time: Loop-X tablet control enables optimal workflows and speeds up surgery 
  • The patient is exposed to less radiation than in usual procedures. 
  • Prevents possible injury to nerve structures thanks to its millimetric precision 
  • It facilitates minimally invasive surgery, so the patient’s recovery is faster and with less pain
  • The results are better and the need for reoperation is considerably reduced thanks to the final verification of the correct placement of the implants. 

Which surgeries do we use it for?

Use of the Loop-X scanner is indicated in surgeries for cervical and lumbar disc herniations, spondylolisthesis, lumbar spinal stenosisscoliosis, vertebral fractures and sacroiliitis

Therefore, we can take advantage of this technology for some of our main specialties such as disc replacement surgery (ADR)lateral approach lumbar fusion (XLIF), or fusion of the sacroiliac joint, among others.
